When you long for an escape to rejuvenate the spirit or reignite romance, look to the StoneFort Inn. This elegant, adults-only stay caters to couples and those wanting a relaxing retreat. Guest rooms boast upscale decor, claw-foot or jetted bathtubs, and some of the cushiest beds around. While rates may be a bit pricey ($125 to $250 on weekends), this Chattanooga find is truly worth the expense.

Elegant Comfort
Interesting architecture and exquisite taste set the StoneFort Inn apart. Owners Harry and Maura Phillips spent a little more than two years converting the building--originally a circa 1909 hotel--into a one-of-a-kind haven.

Downstairs, you'll find everything from restored heart-pine and terrazzo flooring to exposed limestone walls and a salvaged tin ceiling. Upstairs, Maura and her sister, interior decorator Margo Estrada, designed the 16 rooms in distinct styles. While one room boasts black-and-white toile, another features green-and-pink floral prints, and yet another has a playful dog theme.

Aesthetics aside, the guest rooms have, quite possibly, the most comfortable beds you'll find in any lodging. The Phillipses spared no expense for the overstuffed, pillow-top mattresses and 100% Egyptian cotton sheets.

Fabulous Dining
The food at this stay also satisfies. On weekdays, guests enjoy a Continental breakfast (part of the room rate) that may include croissants with cream and jam, as well as a fruit parfait topped with granola. On weekends, a gourmet breakfast has dressed-up versions of classics. For instance, spiced plums, strawberries, and an orange-infused maple syrup top the French toast. The hearty banana bread and blueberry muffins with fresh berries also please.

Since we last visited, Harry and Maura have added Nathan's at the StoneFort Inn to the building. This restaurant offers contemporary American cuisine inspired by the flavors of Southern France and Northern Italy. If the restaurant has anywhere close to the caliber of service and style as the inn, it is likely worth a visit.
