St. Louis for a Song
Treat your family to a delightfully fun and inexpensive stay in the Gateway City.
By Richard Banks

For a spectacular view of St. Louis, ride to the top of the 630-foot Gateway Arch, the country's tallest national monument.

So, you think a low-cost vacation means spending a weekend at Aunt Minerva's? Try St. Louis this summer instead.

St. Louis offers around 60 free attractions--the most of any city outside the Nation's Capital--and that doesn't count watching the grass grow, cars rust, or clocks tick. We're talking quality things to do here, such as visiting the city's world-class zoo and one of the country's coolest interactive museums. What's more, there's a host of other fun activities and sites in St. Louis--including great restaurants and local shopping--that, while not free, won't cost an arm and a leg. So follow us to a fun-filled vacation.

Wildlife and Wacky Fun
The most remarkable of the city's freebies is the Saint Louis Zoo. Located about 6 miles from downtown, it's nestled in the 1,300-acre Forest Park, which is also home to the Saint Louis Art Museum, Missouri History Museum, and the St. Louis Science Center. (All offer free admission to most of their exhibits.)

The zoo itself is home to more than 6,000 animals, many of whom live in realistic habitats. When you go, be sure to take in a show at the Children's Zoo, where you can see porcupines, springhares, pygmy goats, meerkats, and other lively critters.
