You won't look like a landlubber for long aboard Captain Memo's pirate cruise.

These sugar-sand beaches are a great spot to settle in for a weekend. Lying at the northern end of the St. Petersburg area, right where State 60 ends at the Gulf, Clearwater is perfect if you don't want to go anywhere particular, but it also sports lots of options for outings, both close by and in surrounding vicinities.

For a convenient location, choose lodging near Pier 60, the heart of Clearwater Beach. The Hilton ([727] 461-3222; rates start at $129) and Adam's Mark ([727] 443-5714; rates start at $145) each front the Gulf and serve as bookends to the public beach. For a thrifty alternative, check in to the Red Roof Inn ([727] 447-3464; rates start at $75) on the south end of the beach near the Adam's Mark.

Opt for an early supper at one of Frenchy's three restaurants, favorites for seafood in swimsuit-and-sandals settings. Their Rockaway Grill on the water stays crowded, but the service is fast. The grouper sandwich ($7.25) here is fresh and tender--a far cry from fast food's mystery fish on a bun.

Next, head to Clearwater Beach Marina to look for Captain Memo's red-and-black pirate ship and board for the 7 p.m. cruise. The top deck is perfect for watching pink-and-orange sunsets and spotting dolphins at play.

When the ship docks at 9 p.m., cross the street to Pier 60, the focal point for fun in this town. Every night (weather permitting) artisans and musicians line the pier's promenade to celebrate the setting of the sun.

Near the end of the pier, the crowd thins out, and serious anglers take over. Pay 50 cents to walk to the end and watch what they're reeling in. Or purchase your own daily fishing pass--no license is needed, and you can keep your catch. It's windy out there, so wear a wrap or light jacket.
