A NOTE TO OUR READERS:
"Spring in Pinehurst" is from the March 2007 issue of Southern Living.
Because prices, dates, and other specifics are subject to change, please check all
information to make sure it's still current before making your travel plans.
Pinehurst, North Carolina, and its charming neighboring communities of
Southern Pines and Aberdeen are little gems that sparkle in the spring, so get
there now.
Where To Stay
Last year, Pinehurst Resort renovated its guest
rooms in The Carolina (rates start at $169 per person; www.pinehurst.com
or 1-800-487-4653). If you are looking for all the amenities but a more
cozy feel, call early for a room at The Holly Inn (rates start at $169),
the resort's more intimate stay. For an affordable chain option we
recommend the nearby Homewood Suites (rates start at $119;
www.homewoodnear
pinehurstnc.com or 1-877-901-4663).
Where To Shop
The Village of Pinehurst features redbrick
sidewalks and great little shops, including Cottage Chic, one of our
favorites, which offers stylish linens, furniture, and clothing. When
shopping for spring, stop into Gulley's in Southern Pines, an
independent garden shop. Check out The Garden Room in Aberdeen, which
sells funky birdhouses and other garden accessories. Peruse the
doorknobs, hinges, and finials down the street at Railside Antiques.
Where To Dine
No visit to Pinehurst Resort is complete
without a night at The 1895 Grille. We liked the confit of duck ravioli
($8.75) and the rack of lamb ($27). For a slightly more casual
atmosphere, make reservations at Chef Warren's ([910] 692-5240) in
Southern Pines. Chef Warren Lewis surprises his diners with a seasonal
wild game entrée each evening (from elk to kangaroo to llama). Not quite
ready to be that adventurous? Try the tapas-portioned Lobster Rangoon
($9.50) or the grilled pork chop ($23.95).
Where To Relax
The Spa at Pinehurst inspires such a restful,
comfortable experience each time we return that it remains one of our
favorite spas in the state. Ease into a treatment (the specially
tailored Pinehurst Signature Massage starts at $70 for 30 minutes) to
make your stay here that much better.
