8. Sea Turtle Inn, Jacksonville, Florida
The primary perk of staying at the Sea Turtle Inn is that you are 30 paces from the beach. You can head directly from your room to the sandy shores without ever picking up the car keys.
You won't find luxury at the Sea Turtle, but you will find tropical-themed rooms and common spaces that are clean due to a complete property revamp in 2000. Rates: $99 for nonoceanfront rooms September and November-February. 1-800-874-6000 or www.seaturtle.com.
9. The Park Hotel, Charlotte, North Carolina
You'll be amazed that a place of this caliber is affordable, but it is. Located in the SouthPark area, this property defines polished elegance, with fresh-cut flowers, English-style architecture, green marble floors, period furnishings, and sophisticated sitting areas. Each of the 192 traditionally decorated guest rooms feels spacious and comfortable, much like a nice home. Rates: $159-$169. The hotel offers special weekend packages and rates for less than $100, based on availability. (704) 364-8220 or www.theparkhotel.com.
10. The Tutwiler, Birmingham, Alabama
With its powerful circular drive and soaring columns out front, this hotel has been a Birmingham legend since the twenties. After a renovation in 2000, the property boasts modern-day amenities while holding on to sophisticated style. The rooms, with the occasional stain here or tear there, tend to show some wear. Still, we appreciate this grande dame.
One of the best features of the property is its proximity to the city's downtown attractions. Rates: $100 on select days May-August. (205) 322-2100.
