Once we had created the general shape of the base, tower, and roof, we began adding details. I used the cheese-serving wedge to cut stairs into the side of the castle and the point of a knife to carve out small windows. (You can also use small shells to make the windows.) Meredith used the tip of the knife to clear a thin layer of sand off the side, and I carved tiny bricks and cracks in that space. We used a balloon pump to gently blow stray sand out of the windows, stairs, and bricks. The “hard pack” is very sturdy, so we were able to carefully clear a tunnel through the base of the castle.
