  • Sweetgrass baskets--The Old City Market downtown and on the roadside along U.S. 17 going toward Georgetown. They run $20 to $300.
  • Historic Charleston Reproductions--105 Broad Street; (843) 723-8292. Gifts, jewelry, furniture reproductions. No sales tax. A brass pineapple door knocker costs $75.
  • Olde Colony Bakery--1391 Stuart Engals Blvd., Mount Pleasant; 1-800-722-9932. Where benne seed wafers--a Charleston staple since colonial times--are made. A 5-ounce bag costs $3.30.

Dining

  • Hominy Grill--207 Rutledge Avenue; (843) 937-0930. Don't miss the Chicken-Fried Steak ($8.95). Breakfast runs $8.
  • Charleston Place--205 Meeting Street; (843) 722-4900 or 1-800-611-5545. Afternoon tea here is tops and begins at $18 per person. Or have the staff pack a picnic basket for you with boiled shrimp, cold sliced tenderloin, cheese, fruit, blackened chicken salad, and cheesecake for $31 per person.
  • High Cotton--199 East Bay Street; (843) 724-3815. Don't miss the Cheese Grits ($3) and the Fried Oysters with Green Goddess Dressing ($9). Delectable.
  • 39 Rue de Jean--39 John Street; (843) 722-8881. Natives swear by the Truffle Potato Soup for $5.50.
  • The Boathouse on East Bay--549 East Bay Street; (843) 577-7171. Locals love the fresh oysters and shellfish as well as the air-conditioned patio dining. Raw oysters go for 50 cents apiece.
