More than just a sleepy, old part of town, Savannah's Historic District remains the perfect place to look for treasures and have a nice meal. Where Bull Street meets Liberty, you'll discover charming galleries and boutiques as well as one of the best lunch spots.

Focus on Shopping
Eleanor and Jack Coburn have nurtured their ladies' apparel boutique, Chutzpah and Panache, for 27 years. "I work with individual, lesser-known artists and designers," Eleanor says. She describes their one-of-a-kind clothing items as "artwear." Prices range from $100 to $1,200.

On the corresponding corner, Gaucho (which also has a location on Broughton) sells a wide assortment of women's shoes and accessories among colorful jeans, sweaters, and edgy evening wear.

To get ready for next month's big St. Patrick's Day celebration, drop in on Saints & Shamrocks. The store features religious items as well as Irish-inspired gifts such as hats, ties, maps, and linens.

Next door, indulge in holly days year-round at The Christmas Shop on Bull. It's the very best Yuletide shop in the region--good enough to hold your attention in February. In addition to collectibles by Radko and Slavic Treasures, you'll find ornate costume jewelry and evening purses.

Other shops vying for your attention on Bull and Liberty include Anna's Antiques--lovely furniture and porcelain from the Federal period--and the Morning Star Gallery, which showcases handmade arts and crafts as well as a stained glass studio.

above, middle: The Six Pence Pub, which has appeared in numerous movies and television shows, makes a handsome spot to relax. But save your appetite for places that specialize in something other than atmosphere.

Where To Dine
You'll find a combination restaurant and art gallery at Soho South Cafe. At lunchtime, locals crowd the dining space that occupies a third of an old garage and warehouse. Memorable sandwiches, such as meat loaf ($7.25) and a turkey Reuben ($7.95), satisfy hungry diners. The surrounding area beckons your eye with intriguing art, antiques, and gifts under the name Savannah Fine Arts.

Six Pence Pub sits between Chutzpah and Panache and Chippewa Square. You won't find a more traditional British pub in Georgia. The atmosphere is very English--unfortunately, so is the food and beer. Still, you'll love the location.
