Screen doors purchased from a home-improvement store easily can be
made into a wall decoration. Screens hide untidy corners, provide
privacy, and filter light. They also can stand alone as an accent piece
for a room. These steps show you how to create your own. First, purchase screen doors and have hardboard paneling cut to fit
inside the back of the doors (one panel per door). Next, select a
wallpaper that matches the room, and age it with an antiquing glaze.
Finally, choose hinges to attach the doors together.
Step 1: Remove the backing of the doors to take out the screen. (You
may have to remove nails and staples.) For a smooth finish, sand the
door frames with a fine-grade sandpaper, and then apply primer to the
entire surface. Step 2: Attach wallpaper to the hardboard
paneling using wallpaper adhesive. Once the adhesive dries, rub the
wallpaper with a fine-grade sandpaper to create a worn appearance. Step 3: Paint the door and trim. Once dry, sand the trim for an
antique look. Step 4: Attach hardboard paneling to the back of
the door using 3/4-inch finishing nails. Step 5: For an aged
appearance, cover the doors and the wallpaper with an antiquing glaze.
(Tip: Add water to lighten the color of the glaze.) Step 6: To seal the entire piece, apply one thin coat of clear polyurethane, and
let dry completely. Hinge the three doors together.
