Walking into Newport, Kentucky's York Street Cafe, you know it's gonna be good. The aromas wafting through the high-ceilinged rooms and the friendly service immediately make your mouth water.

Apothecary Makeover
Built in 1872, this one-time pharmacy building still has its great atmosphere. Owner Terry Cunningham claims it's the best place to go for a first date. "There's so much stuff on the walls, you'll have plenty to talk about," he says with a smile.

The second floor features a nightclub with entertainment such as murder mysteries and improv comedy. The third floor boasts an art gallery.

left: A great location for a first date? You bet. Items on the walls and shelves in this one-time pharmacy building bring out great conversation. right: Lunch and dinner menus at York Street Cafe offer up such dining delights as halibut encrusted with spinach.

Fine Fare
Meanwhile, you have menu choices to make on the first floor. Order the local favorite called a Toastie ($6.50), a pita delight consisting of creamy spinach-and-artichoke-hearts topping with Gouda cheese. If you're truly famished, indulge in the most popular entrée, the halibut encrusted with spinach and topped with sherry butter ($23). Plan to have dessert. York Street cakes are worth every bite and calorie. Try either thechocolate-hazelnut flourless torte or the strawberry buttermilk cake ($5 per slice).

Want another reason to dine here? "During baseball season, you can walk across the bridge from here to a game in Cincinnati," says Terry. "It's only a 10-minute walk to the stadium."
