Special Texas Living: People & Places Section This Month

Birmingham, AL – Southern Living rolls into the heart of spring – literally. Our travel editors give their favorite picks of places to visit or eat just off the interstate: I-35, I-95, and I-65. Each stop is 15 minutes or less from the road and promises to add good food, big fun, and family adventure to any trip. [For the full story “Best Exits” visit SouthernLiving.com/interstates; Travel editors are available for interviews – contact Helen_Todd@timeinc.com] Also in May our Food editors reveal the Southern secret ingredient – buttermilk. And, our Home editors take a real-life look at green design, showing readers how it truly is easier than ever to go green while still keeping style and comfort in your home.

Special this month: Texas Living People & Places

Saving the Family Ranch–Kerith and Tony Timmons pour their hearts into preserving the H.E. Sproul Ranch near Fort Davis. Tony has built the ranch into a model for ecotourism, and Kerith, an estate attorney, splits her time between a law office in El Paso and helping out at the ranch.

Grand Prairie’s Music Man–Tuan Nguyen, professional violinist, started Children of the Strings Orchestra in Grand Prairie in 2003 to provide a musical outlet for his children. Now his 25-member group rehearses weekly and performs as often as 20 times a year.

Oasis in Lubbock–Anna and Aric Johnson cultivate the Little Red Riding Hood Nursery in Lubbock. Anna’s mom, Mary Lee, started the business as a small video and plant store. Today, it is a city block nursery of vibrant colors where gardeners come for the best advice.

Wedding Dress Designer– After working as a costume designer for theater and film productions, Kari Perkins altered her plans to focus on wedding gowns through her business, Estrella Bridal Art. This Austin-based entrepreneur loves the creative process and joy of designing a one-of-a-kind dress for each bride.

From Glass, Fine Art– Family tradition lives at the Stanton Glass Studio in Waco. Bryant Stanton founded his business 30 years ago and is now passing the glass torch to his sons, who continue to create and restore masterpieces across Texas.

Tea at Bawdsey Manor–This British tearoom brings English tradition to San Antonio. Sisters Vicki Seder and Christine Thomas have been sharing a cup of tea and other British entrees with passersby since they opened 16 years ago.
