Our travel editors give their favorite picks of places to visit or eat just off the interstate: I-35, I-95, and I-65. Each stop is 15 minutes or less from the road and promises to add good food, big fun, and family adventure to any trip. And, our Home editors take a real-life look at green design, showing readers how it truly is easier than ever to go green while still keeping style and comfort in your home. Special this month: South Carolina Living People & Places Built for Speed –At the Columbia Midlands Soap Box Derby, motorless, homemade racers whiz down Taylor Street each May. This annual event draws veterans such as Kaitlyn Hulst, 13, and new comers like Michael Browder, 8, from across the state for the thrill and glory. Cooking with Fire – Rusty Lindberg and Laura Buchanan, owners of La Cantina in Clarks Hill, are living their dream–combining the food service and entertainment businesses. With a location off the beaten path, they serve up authentic cuisine, homemade desserts, and lots of laughter. Coastal Color Chic –Harriett and Greg Bosiack are the creative brains behind Seabrook Classics, a casual furniture company. Their daughter, Sarah Ross, who once lamented the move to South Carolina, has now joined the family business to market their distinct brightly-painted Palmetto style. Women at Work – Lesley Scott is the future homeowner of a house funded and built exclusively by women through the Women Build project for Sea Island Habitat for Humanity. With 2,000 volunteer hours needed to complete the house, women from all over pitched in to lend a hand. A River Blooms – On the waters of the Catawba at Lansford Canal State Park, a miracle blossoms each Spring, the Rocky Shoals Spider Lily. Many look forward to the LilyFest each May, and park manager Al James loves leading the guided canoe tours for those wishing to see this rare lily up close. Weaving a Story – Former accountant Elaine Robson of Pelzer teaches Southern Living assistant editor Allison Barnes the tradition, and art, of basket weaving. Robson turned to basket weaving two decades ago to blend the right and left sides of her brain in this unique art-form.
