HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MAY ISSUE OF SOUTHERN LIVING MAGAZINE Special Mid-Atlantic Living People and Places Section This Month Birmingham, AL – Southern Living rolls into the heart of spring – literally. Our travel editors give their favorite picks of places to visit or eat just off the interstate: I-35, I-95, and I-65. Each stop is 15 minutes or less from the road and promises to add good food, big fun, and family adventure to any trip. [For the full story “Best Exits” visit SouthernLiving.com/interstates; Travel editors are available for interviews – contact Helen_Todd@timeinc.com] Also in May our Food editors reveal the Southern secret ingredient – buttermilk. And, our Home editors take a real-life look at green design, showing readers how it truly is easier than ever to go green while still keeping style and comfort in your home. Special this month: Mid-Atlantic Living People & Places Nature’s Classroom – After 60 years, Nature Camp still continues to lure kids each summer to The George Washington National Forest. New generations leave their iPods behind finding fascination in the natural environment. Aboard a Tall Ship – History comes alive when you sail the Kalmar Nyckel, a replica 1638 sailing ship that brought the first permanent settlers to Wilmington. In fact, you even get to help hoist the sail when you leave the harbor. Costs start at $65 for a day, but there are overnight and private excursion options. Magic on the Menu – Owner and magician, Ted Levitt, continues the patriotism started by his parents in their Annapolis restaurant, Chick and Ruth’s Delly. After the daily reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance, he mesmerizes patrons and patients with magic tricks and even takes his act on the road to the local hospital’s children’s ward. Georgetown Gets Glamorous – Georgetown residents and retailers smile about their charming surroundings on Cady’s Alley. Anthony Lanier, president of Eastbanc, Inc., is the passionate developer who has been promoting the potential of this shopping mecca for seven years. Artist in Residence – Painter Nancy Carver-Thompson loves Maryland’s Eastern Shore so much that she has two homes: one in Snow Hill and another in Solomon’s Island. Her talent for watercolor technique is evident to her regular students and keeps her traveling around the country to give workshops.
