Special Texas Living Section This Month

Birmingham, AL – Southern Living emerges in March with a bold new look and feel. Our new combined Home & Garden section has flea market-inspired decorating ideas, tips for the garden, and how to be green and clean. Hungry? We conquer your sweet tooth with Tempting Two-Bite Desserts and a special Healthy Living section on how to fry with a clear conscience.

In addition, take a look at Texas Living—a Special Section just for our Texas readers:
Put a Lid on It – What do cowboys do when there are not enough cattle to work? Make hats, of course. Kelly and Zol Owens of Limpia Creek Hats in Fort Davis became hatters by day to supplement their ranch business. It’s a business that’s really taken off with customers, as well as the cowboys who make these unique hats.

Cruising and Cooking - Chef Michael Flores wanted to combine his love for cooking with his hometown’s passion for the river, so he devised Learn Aboard! Guests can check out his culinary skills and get a view of the River Walk at the same time. He also owns his business, Mis En Place.

The Art of Making Violins – In Abilene, music flows from the patient hands of Math Deatherage, a master luthier. He and his wife, Jan, own Deatherage Music Company, and they restore, repair, and make any stringed instruments as long as the wood “rings.”

Two Hearts at Home – Gay and Lee Gaddis of Austin work hard all week at T3, their advertising firm, but escape to their Double Heart ranch on the weekends. They often find solutions to office issues while riding a trail or tending to cattle.

Three Bookstores – Jane Moser, Martha Farrington, and Jim Taylor of Houston all share a love of books. These Houstonians own or manage independent book stores (Brazos Bookstore, Murder by the Book, and The Book Collector) catering to such specialties as murder, collectibles, or the up-and-coming Texas author.

Please Keep on the Grass – When they arrive at the Dallas Arboretum, kids immediately bolt for the lush green spaces, which is perfectly fine with the horticulturists. Each year the Arboretum plants 400,000 bulbs to welcome spring – it’s a sight not to be missed.

To Africa from Dallas – Interior Architectural Designer Trisha Wilson has traveled the world in her business, but she started her foundation to help children in her adopted home – the bush of South Africa. The Wilson Foundation not only helps children in Africa, but also helps disadvantaged students in Dallas with scholarships for college.
