SOUTHERN LIVING LAUNCHES NEW DESIGN IN MARCH
Readers Are the Focus for Changes

Birmingham, Ala. – Starting in March the nation’s 7th largest consumer magazine, Southern Living, will have an all-new look and feel, providing readers with more of what they love about the South.

“Our readers were definitely the driving factor behind the majority of changes we’ve made,” said Southern Living Editor in Chief John Floyd. “Our photography is going to be bigger, and the stories more engaging. And, while the trim size and binding are changing – our mission is not. We will still celebrate the best of life in the South.”

What’s New:

  • It’s bigger with new binding. Southern Living is changing from saddle stitched (staples) to perfect binding. The trim size is now 8-3/8” x 10-½”.
  • Updated navigation. Color-coded bars on edit pages will be keyed to specific sections to help readers easily locate and reference their favorite content. Title slugs and multiple entry points will guide readers to the service information they want and expect in each story.
  • New combination of favorite sections. We are merging Homes and Gardens into one section, which allows our readers to find everything they need to know about their homes, inside and out, in one place.
  • Healthy Living will appear monthly. In direct response to our readers, we will now run this section monthly instead of quarterly, and it will still provide a positive, realistic approach to living healthy in the South.
  • Unified literary section called Points South. This section will combine our popular columns—Southern Journal, Books About the South, and Southerners—to celebrate the best of Southern culture every month.

The new design hits newsstands February 26, and Southern Living expects the changes will appeal to long-time subscribers as well as a new generation of readers. “I planned this redesign for all the women in my life,” said Creative Director Howard Greenberg. “My 30-something cousin—a wife and mother—in Mooresville, North Carolina, considers Southern Living her favorite magazine, and I think we made sure that it will stay her favorite magazine. And I thought about the urban women in the South and the woman down the street. We’re taking a great magazine and making it better for all of them.”

“We know young families are on the go and have busy lifestyles,” added Floyd, “so we wanted to provide them with time-saving information as well. For example, in our foods sections we will provide more menu planning and shopping tips along with our top-notch, kitchen-tested recipes. There will also be plenty of references to where they can find additional information and enhanced content on our Web site, SouthernLiving.com.”

Little Known Facts About Southern Living:

  • In 2007 our Travel and Living editors wrote more than 700 stories, covering 17 states, plus Washington, D.C.
