New Monthly Section “Healthy Living” Features On-The-Go Breakfasts for Kids,
Tips to Stock a Wholesome Pantry, and Ways to Prevent Viruses This Winter

Birmingham, AL – The February issue of Southern Living magazine debuts the new monthly section, Healthy Living. Previously a quarterly section, Healthy Living gives readers easy-to-accomplish ways to improve their lives and keep their health top of mind.

Inside Healthy Living:
How to Stay Well (page 99) – Do your part to prevent the spread of viruses this season by keeping these items handy. 1) Antiviral tissues kill more than 99% of cold and flu viruses. Send these to school with the kids, and keep them at your desk at work. 2) Use hydrogen peroxide or vinegar and baking soda to clean and disinfect. They’re much safer alternatives to bleach. 3) Keep hand sanitizer handy, but also follow up with a good scrub at the sink.

Recipes for Healthy Breakfast Cookies (page 102) – Southern Living offers great recipes for preparing on-the-go breakfasts for kids. The Oatmeal-Pecan Snack Cookie paired with a thermos of skim milk is a nutritious, quick, and easy option kids will love.

Good For You Pantry (page 100) – Southern Living gives tips for stocking a wholesome pantry.

  • Choose good grains: Keep fiber-packed grains such as brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, and oatmeal in airtight containers for up to six months.
  • Grab a can or jar: Opt for reduced-sodium broths, soups, and vegetables and choose fruits packed in natural juices instead of sweet syrups.
  • Add easy flavor: Dried spices and seasonings offer zest without extra fat and calories. Store them for up to six months. A dash of soy sauce or vinegar goes a long way so keep it light.

Also in this issue:
Florida’s Quiet Side (page 31) – The fishing village of Apalachicola has a mind of its own and good times to share. Associate Travel Editor Wanda McKinney offers picks for dining, shopping, and adventure.

The Face of Freedom (page 38) – Retrace the path to equality at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, TN. It commemorates the 40th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this coming April.

The Biggest Party in Houston (page 72) – The 23-day Livestock Show and Rodeo offers more than just a chance to don your Western duds and watch the cowboys ride. It’s an amazing time!

A Better Approach to Brunch (page 88) – This Southern Living easy prep midmorning meal has unbelievable flavor. Recipes include: Cream Cheese-Banana-Nut Bread, Shrimp and Grits, and Bloody Mary Punch.
