SOUTHERN LIVING Tackles Hot Trend of Container Gardens
In A Special Edition On News Stands Now

Birmingham, Ala. –If you have a brown thumb Southern Living has the cure with a new special 110-page edition on newsstands now – Southern Living Container Gardening.

Well-known gardening author and Southern Living Senior Garden Writer Steve Bender edited this ultimate resource for people who don't have a lot of time or space or don’t want to spend a lot of money.

“You can get a big impact in just a few days without taking out a second mortgage,” said Bender.  “Nothing is more important to successful gardening than good soil and container gardening allows you to garden in perfect soil every time. You can grow any type of ornamental plant in a container and we zero in on our picks for the easiest outdoor and indoor plants to grow.”

Southern Living Container Gardening gives dozens of examples of beautiful ways to display pots for maximum impact. And, it offers lots of practical tips for beginners, including how to pick the right pot, how to water, how to fertilize, and what kind of potting soil to use. So whether you're interested in growing pots of pansies, petunias, impatiens, boxwoods, or philodendrons, Container Gardening tells you everything you need to succeed.

Tips Include:
Top It Off – for all the effort on plant choices and containers, an often overlooked detail is covering exposed soil. The reason to do this is two-fold: It helps retain moisture, and it gives the planter a finished look. No need to stick to common bark mulch. Try using sweet gum balls and pinecones in clusters or crack up brightly colored ceramic tiles.

Piggyback Pots – You may already have terra-cotta pots on hand. If not, you can purchase them reasonably in all shapes and sizes. Try stacking them inside one another and filling with a variety of different plants or herbs for a new look. In large pots use two bricks, side-by-side for a stable base. This also prevents top pots from sinking.
