Special Alabama: People and Places Section This Month

Birmingham, AL – Spring is in the air, and no one celebrates it more than Southern Living. In our April issue you will find no-fuss ideas for hosting an easy springtime party; how to have a terrific front yard; and recipes that will help you get your family—kids and all—to enjoy eating healthy.

Special this month—Alabama: People and Places
Top Notch– You could travel to New York to get quality goat cheese, or you could look to your neighbor for some of the best goat and cream cheese around. Tasia Malakasis runs Belle Chèvre, a small, local creamery in Elkmont which is making big statements as one of the best goat cheese suppliers in the country.

Batter Up With the BayBears– In a town that loves baseball, Mike Callahan, director of entertainment for the Mobile BayBears, creatively entertains steady fans at the Hank Aaron Stadium. With themed games all season, fans are sure to have a good time. And there’s a good chance you might see the stadium’s namesake, Hank Aaron, as well as other homegrown heroes.

Honoring Rural Heritage– All the action is in the center of Thomaston at the Alabama Rural Heritage Foundation Center, where Gayle Etheridge and the Foundation have created a public space for artists to showcase work, theater groups to entertain, and families to gather. You won’t want to miss the upcoming Pepper Jelly Festival!

A Safe Place for Wild Animals – Susan Steffens-McCauley and her husband Wilbur McCauley, moved to Attalla two years ago to provide a safe haven for wild animals. Through their organization, Tigers for Tomorrow at Untamed Mountain, they teach environmental education to visitors and maintain a home for more than 100 animals.

Coffee with Heart – Three friends, Glenn Smith, Josh Kelly, and Alex Varner, have brewed careers with their Leeds-based company, Higher Ground Roasters. They support organic farmers through fair-trade, and their business thrives because of their quality beans.

Fresh Fare in Helena – If you are looking to fill your fridge or your stomach, then look no further than Frankie’s Market Café in Helena. Owned by Frankie and Angie Cacioppo, these experienced produce providers draw regulars and visitors daily for their home-cooked, healthy meals. Even kids eat their veggies in the family-friendly atmosphere.
