Displaying a Family Collection
This loft brightly displays a couple's passion for art and culture.

Gaynell and Elias Hendricks have made a home true to their hearts. Their expansive urban loft, brightly decorated with an array of art and creative furnishings, welcomes all visitors while conveying their high regard for culture and tradition. The renovated space draws its spirit from the family's collection of African and African-inspired pieces.

When the Hendrickses moved from the suburbs into the heart of Birmingham, they gave architect David Gillespie two missions: preserve the character of the historic structure--headquarters of a former railroad company, and provide a livable space for the couple and their teenage twins. David succeeded, marrying the functional office space with fresh architectural concepts. He made the most of the loft with exposed ceilings, beautiful hardwood floors, defining archways, and a stunning staircase. The real power of the place, though, stems from the art they love.

His years with the Peace Corps in Ghana sparked Elias's love for African art. "Gaynell and I share that love with our family and friends," he says. "We're always seeking things from our history that have meaning. Through the years, we have acquired pieces passed down in our families and from our travels. We also buy from African art galleries, local artists, antiques stores, and collectors.
