Project Plan: Library Stool
Having trouble reaching those books on the top shelf? Then order the plans to build our Library Stool. In addition to giving you a boost, the stool can serve as an attractive occasional table.
By Derick Belden
Difficulty Rating (one hammer is least difficult, four hammers is most difficult)

The piece measures about 25 inches tall and 18 inches wide; the depth is 14 inches. The two steps are 71/2 and 15 inches above the floor. Its clean lines will blend with almost any decorating style.

We constructed our example from Honduras mahogany, but you could substitute cherry, walnut, oak, or maple to match other pieces of furniture. For a more casual look, make the stool out of pine, and give it a painted and distressed finish.

Each side is made from three different lengths of wood to give a stepped effect. For strength, the braces are attached to the sides with mortise-and-tenon joints. Power tools needed include a table saw and a band saw or saber saw. If desired, a router can be used to round over the edges of the sides and steps.
