Difficulty Rating (one hammer is least difficult, four hammers is most difficult)
This project plan offers a simplified interpretation of the demilune (French for half-moon) console. The three-legged piece, designed to fit against a wall, is an excellent choice
for a hall. The semicircular top measures 36 inches wide and 18 inches deep; the piece stands
28 inches high.
Although the curved front looks difficult, it's surprisingly easy to make if you have access to a
band saw. First, blocks of wood are cut and stacked in courses, much like laying brick. After the
glue dries, the curved front rail is cut out using the band saw. A thin veneer of wood is then bent
and glued over the curved face to cover the joints. The three tapered legs are attached to the rails
with traditional mortise-and-tenon joints for maximum strength.
Our example was built of cypress, but another wood such as pine, maple, or walnut could be
substituted. You could even build the piece from one wood and use a different kind for the veneer.
