When welcoming overnight visitors, you want them to feel at home while they are staying
with you. So your natural inclination is to provide them with the best accommodations that you can.
But what if a separate bath isn't possible due to cost or space?
Sensible Solution
Don't fret--there
is an answer. Homeowner Carvel Taylor's guestroom in Virginia Beach contains a convenient vanity
area that will cater to any company. Her son-in-law, architect David Amory, masterminded this
amenity by building out two adjacent closets to create a central alcove just large enough for a
pedestal sink. With the addition of a mirror and sconces, this solution provides the perfect
face-washing and shaving nook.
David didn't just stop with the sink. As a means of water protection,
he faced the wall behind the fixture with beaded board and then painted it to match the room's trim.
He also provided attic access in the ceiling above the nook.
Expand This Idea
Guests are not the
only ones who can appreciate this solution. If your family battles for sink space every morning,
consider adding a separate vanity for each bedroom, or tuck one into a hallway that connects the
sleeping quarters.
