Materials
Here is a list of the materials needed to create your beautiful velvet lampshade.
• strips of acetate-rayon velvet ribbon
• scissors
• rubber stamps (large, simple designs work best)
• spray bottle of water
• iron
• lampshade
• double-sided tape
• desired trim and fringe
Give an ordinary lampshade a decorative twist this holiday season by wrapping it with lengths of embossed velvet ribbon. It's simple to transfer rubber stamp patterns onto fabric using a heated iron. Double-sided tape will keep embossed ribbon in place. Just follow our simple instructions.
Step 1: Purchase strips of acetate-rayon velvet ribbon. Measure the length and width of a straight-sided lampshade to determine number of strips you'll need and the necessary length to fit around your lampshade. (The wired ribbon strips we used are about 2 inches wide and 3 feet long.)
Step 2: Heat iron on the wool or cotton setting; do not use a steam setting. Mist back side of velvet ribbon lightly with water. Place the stamp, rubber side up, on the ironing board. (Note: Stamps must be able to withstand heat.) Lay ribbon right side down against the rubber stamp. Press the iron on fabric and do not move it, being sure to use the part of the iron with no steam holes. Count 15 to 45 seconds, and remove the iron. (Experiment on an extra piece to determine the proper amount of time.)
Step 3: Move the stamp to the next section of ribbon; repeat the process until your design is complete. If the rubber is becoming extremely hot, let the stamp cool before continuing.
Step 4: Wrap lampshade with double-sided tape, and apply embossed velvet strips. Make sure that the strip ends meet at the back, leaving a uniform look for the front. Use double-sided tape or a glue gun to attach trim and beaded fringe.
