How To Stay Well
Take charge of cold-and-flu season with these healthy tips.
By Allison Barnes / Photography Van Chaplin

Several weeks remain before cold-and-flu season peaks in the South. To keep the sniffles at bay, you could walk around wearing a surgical mask and rubber gloves. Or, to avoid germs (and stares), you could adopt these practical tips for keeping clean.

Back to Basics
Whenever possible, cough or sneeze into a tissue or into the crook of your arm. That way, germs don't end up on your hands. Good ole soap and water are best for washing away the yuck after blowing your nose.

Don't overuse alcohol-based wipes and gel sanitizers because they kill all bacteria--even the good ones that help you stay healthy.

Stunt Their Growth
Everyday objects such as a computer mouse and keyboard, doorknob, steering wheel, cell and landline phones, and grocery cart are breeding grounds for germs. Keep a stash of antibacterial wipes in your purse for quick disinfecting.

When in public restrooms, try this: After drying your hands with a paper towel, use that same towel to open the door, and then discard it. When eating out, politely ask your server to make sure the drink pitcher doesn't touch the rim of your glass so bacteria from others won't be transferred. It's not too much to ask when it comes to your health.

Wellness Tool Kit
Do your part to prevent the spread of viruses by keeping these items handy.
Antiviral tissues kill more than 99% of cold and flu viruses. Send these to school with the kids, and keep them on your desk at work.
Hydrogen peroxide or vinegar and baking soda are safer disinfecting alternatives to bleach.
Antibacterial wipes clean everyday tools.
Hand sanitizer does the trick on the spot. Keep a little bottle in your car--just remember to follow up with a good scrub at the sink.

Healthy Benefits

Hand washing reduces the spread of bacteria and infections, increasing your chances of staying well. Scrub for the 15 to 20 seconds it takes to sing "Happy Birthday."
Covering your cough or sneeze isn't just polite; it also helps stop the spread of infections such as the common cold and flu.
