Few shrubs can match the magnificent flowers and handsome, evergreen foliage of the rhododendron. Rhododendrons like moist, acid, well-drained soil and light shade. Unfortunately, most don’t enjoy our hot summers. So when you go to the garden center, it’s important to choose a heat-tolerant selection. Good choices include: ‘A. Bedford’ (lavender-blue), ‘Anah Kruschke’ (purple), ‘Anna Rose Whitney’ (deep pink), ‘Caroline’ (orchid-pink), ‘Chionoides’ (white), ‘Nova Zembla’ (red), ‘Roseum Elegans’ (lilac-pink), ‘Scintillation’ (pink), ‘Trude Webster’ (pink), and ‘Vulcan’ (brick-red).
