Q: What's the best wine to serve after dinner?
B. Aragon
Moulton, Texas
A: There are as many answers to this question as there are
personal preferences among those who enjoy wine. The short answer is
feel free to serve whatever wine it is that you or your guests
prefer to drink--red, white, bubbly, dessert--it really doesn't
matter as long as everyone's happy. There are traditional after
dinner wines such as the "fortified" Port from Portugal and Sherry
from Spain. Fortified wines are those which have had alcohol added
to stop fermentation, leaving behind residual sugar and sweetness.
There are a wide variety of styles when it comes to Port and Sherry.
For example, 10-year-old Tawny Port, usually a very good value, and
Pedro Ximenez Sherry, often labeled as PX, are good bets for after
dinner.
(Note: Like other generically labeled wines, generic "port"
and "sherry" are not the real thing.)
