A NOTE TO OUR READERS:
"Our Favorite Regional Restaurants" is from the Favorites 2005 issue of Southern Living.
BEREABoone Tavern Hotel and Restaurant (Traditional Southern): 100 Main Street; (859) 985-3700, 1-800-366-9358, or www.boonetravernhotel.com. Get ready for gracious dining in this
hotel affiliated with Berea College. Our favorite meal is the Chicken Flakes in a Bird's Nest--creamed chicken in a crispy potato nest, served with whipped potatoes, vegetable, and
cinnamon berry jelly. Spoonbread comes with all entrées. Lunch, dinner.
FRANKFORT
Jim's Seafood (Seafood): 950 Wilkinson Blvd.; (502) 223-7448. The fried shrimp is good, the berry cobbler is great, and the view of the Kentucky River from your table is fabulous.
Lunch (Monday-Friday), dinner (closed Sunday).
HARRODSBURGBeaumont Inn (Traditional Southern): 638 Beaumont Inn Drive; (859) 734-3381, 1-800-352-3992, or www.beaumontinn.com. If you've never tried Yellow-Legged Fried Chicken or
General Robert E. Lee Orange-Lemon Cake, you're missing two good bets. Order The Beaumont Dinner and in addition to the chicken, you'll get a serving of Two-Year-Old Kentucky Cured
Country Ham, with green beans, whipped potatoes, and corn pudding. Lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch (open Wednesday-Saturday).
LEXINGTON AREA
Anna Belle's (Contemporary Southern): 127 North Limestone Street; (859) 381-0900 or www.annabellesbistro.com. A new twist on old favorites, such as the Pistachio Crusted Fried
Green Tomatoes with a Butternut Squash Spicy Drizzle, and Anna Belle's Meat Loaf with Black Truffle Oil. For a quieter meal, ask to be seated on the second floor. Breakfast, lunch, dinner
(closed Sunday).
Hall's on The River (Regional Specialty): 1225 Athens-Boonesborough Road, Boonesborough (south of Lexington; from I-75, take Exit 104); (859) 527-6620 or
www.hallsontheriver.com. The menu features lots of seafood and steak, but try the specialties you'll not see elsewhere. Order two appetizers--Fried Banana Peppers and Hall's Original
Beer Cheese. Follow up with the Kentucky River Hot Brown, a blend of country ham, turkey, and Hall's cream gravy. Lunch, dinner.
Jonathan at Gratz Park (Contemporary Southern): 120 West Second Street; (859) 252-4949 or www.jonathanatgratzpark.com. The sumptuous dining room offers upscale regional
cuisine. The Sea Scallop Hot Browns appetizer is a winner, along with the homemade ice cream. Lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch (closed Monday).
LOUISVILLE
Limestone Restaurant (Contemporary Southern): 10001 Forest Green Boulevard; (502) 426-7477 or www.limestonerestaurant.com. Taste the Sour Mash Bourbon Bread, and you'll
agree--this is pure Kentucky. The chefs throw in a surprise or two, though, such as the Fried Green Tomatoes with Roasted Garlic Mayonnaise and the Braised Beef Short Ribs which come
with smoky white beans, collard greens, and hot water cornbread. Lunch (Monday-Friday), dinner (closed Sunday).
Lynn's Paradise Café (Traditional Southern): 984 Barrett Avenue; (502) 583-3447 or www.lynnsparadisecafe.com. This funky restaurant is a temple of retro furnishings, complete
with the ugliest lamp collection this side of 1962. The food is terrific, especially the macaroni and cheese, and portions are huge. If you can pass up the Home Roasted Turkey with Sage
Dressing, go straight for the sides and build an exceptional vegetable plate. Breakfast, lunch, dinner (no dinner on Monday).
RENFRO VALLEYLodge Restaurant (Traditional Southern): Renfro Valley Entertainment Center, off I-75; (606) 256-2638, 1-800-765-7464, or www.renfrovalley.com. Even if you don't plan to stay
for a show at The Renfro Valley Barn Dance, go for a plate of crispy fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans. Breakfast (Friday-Sunday), lunch, dinner (closed Monday-Tuesday).
