Capital Q BBQ (Barbecue): 707 H Street NW.; (202) 347-8396 or www.capitalqbbq.com. You'll find this bona fide Texas roadside barbecue shack in Chinatown, of all places. The best thing on the menu is, of course, the beef brisket. Tender and smoky, it's accompanied by either mild or spicy red sauce. Sides include collard greens and a cold black-eyed pea salad known as Texas Caviar. Lunch, dinner (closed Sunday).
DC Coast (Contemporary Southern): The Tower Building, 1401 K Street; (202) 216-5988 or www.dccoast.com. From the open kitchen come regional foods with flair. The "Buffalo" Crispy Fried Oysters are dressed with shaved fennel slaw, Maytag blue cheese, and hot sauce butter. The Low Country Shrimp and Grits tastes sublime, and the beignets are to die for. Lunch (Monday-Friday), dinner (closed Sunday).
Old Ebbitt Grill (Seafood): 675 15th Street NW. (one block from the White House); (202) 347-4801 or www.ebbitt.com. This place is renowned for its oyster bar. The menu changes daily, reflecting what's locally and seasonally fresh. Virginia trout, Maryland blue crab, and vegetables from area farms find their way into classic dishes. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, Saturday-Sunday brunch (reservations recommended).
