ALEXANDRIA
  • Majestic Cafe (Contemporary Southern): 911 King Street; (703) 837-9117. Recent offerings include Belgian braised rabbit leg with French potato pancakes and Swiss chard, curried smoked-salmon soup, and sides of spoonbread and country-cooked green beans. Save room for the cake of the day. Lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch (closed Monday).

  • IRVINGTON
  • The Dining Room (Contemporary Southern): 480 King Carter Drive, at The Tides Inn; (804) 438-5000, 1-800-843-3746, or www.tidesinn.com. Dine on traditional Chesapeake Bay regional cuisine. The elegant atmosphere calls for men to wear jackets after 5:30 p.m. Breakfast, dinner (reservations required for dinner).
  • Trick Dog Cafe (Contemporary Southern): 4357 Irvington Road; (804) 438-1055 or www.trickdogcafe.com. You'll find an eclectic assortment of offerings on the menu. The Fried Clamari With Spicy Salsa Verde and Tarragon Rémoulade caught our eye. But so did the Cheese and Pear Sacchette Pasta with Shiitakes, Spinach, Roasted Garlic, and Light Tomato Sauce. Dinner (Tuesday-Saturday), Sunday brunch (reservations recommended).

  • MIDDLEBURG
  • Market Salamander (Contemporary Southern): 200 West Washington Street; (540) 687-8011 or www.market-salamander.com. Vegetables and salads outnumber the entrées, which include Tidewater Crab Cakes and Buttermilk Brined Blue Ridge Chicken. Breakfast, lunch, dinner (closed Monday).

  • NEWPORT NEWS
  • Cowboy Syd's (Contemporary Southern): 3150 William Styron Square North; (757) 599-5800 or www.cowboysyds.com. Seasonal favorites from local waters, paired with traditional sides such as collards and grit cakes with a twist. One fine example is the jumbo lump crab and caper cake with mango chile relish, baby adzuki, and black eye pea ragout. Lunch, dinner, Saturday and Sunday brunch.

  • NORFOLK
  • Todd Jurich's Bistro (Contemporary Southern): 150 West Main Street, Suite 100; (757) 622-3210 or www.toddjurichsbistro.com. This is one of the best restaurants in all of Virginia. The oyster stew is the best we've ever tasted. Entrées range from the fresh catch of the day to A Really Good Meatloaf. Lunch (Monday-Friday), dinner (Monday-Saturday).

  • RICHMOND
  • Acacia (Contemporary Southern): 3325 West Cary Street; (804) 354-6060 or www.acaciarestaurant.com. Chef Dale Reitzer presents familiar dishes with a new twist. The menu changes daily according to what's fresh and available, but there's always macaroni and cheese at lunch. Lunch, dinner (closed Sunday; reservations recommended).
  • Sam Miller's Ocean Grill and Oyster Bar (Seafood): 1210 East Cary Street; (804) 644-5465 or www.sammillers.com. Don't miss the legendary crab soup, thick and creamy with lots of crabmeat and a hint of sherry. The thick crab cakes are broiled crisp and golden. Lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch.

  • ROANOKE
  • The Regency Dining Room (Contemporary Southern): 110 Shenandoah Avenue, in The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center; (540) 985-5900 or www.hotelroanoke.com. Entrées--such as the Corn Cake Chesapeake, smothered with lump crabmeat, shrimp, oysters, and scallops--look and taste elegant. But the reason we'll return again and again is for the Hotel Roanoke Peanut Soup. Breakfast, lunch, dinner (reservations recommended).

  • VIRGINIA BEACH
  • Five 01 City Grill (Seafood): 501 North Birdneck Road; (757) 425-7195 or www.goodfoodgooddrink.com. You can't go wrong with the Screaming Fish Tacos or the Crab "Norfolk" (sautéed jumbo lump crabmeat with shiitake mushrooms, fresh chives, lemon, and butter). Save room for the Warm Chocolate Volcano Cake. Dinner.
  • One Fish Two Fish (Seafood): 2109 West Great Neck Road; (757) 496-4350 or www.onefish-twofish.com. Choose an outdoor waterfront table if possible, and enjoy fabulous seafood fare, including crab cakes. Dinner (reservations recommended).
