KANSAS CITY
Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue (Barbecue): 135th and Holmes, (816) 942-9141; and 22nd and Wyandotte (at the Freight House), (816) 472-7427 or www.jackstackbbq.com. Forget the soggy plates and greasy wax paper wrappers. You'll find a more refined approach to the staple for which the city is known. Start with a Burnt End appetizer (end pieces of beef brisket seared on the outside), and then go for the ribs. Lunch, dinner.
Hereford House (Steaks & Such): 2 East 20th Street; (816) 842-1080 or www.herefordhouse.com. It's been voted one of America's top-10 steak houses, and we agree. You'll forget everything else when they put a sizzling Kansas City strip and twice-baked potato in front of you. Lunch (Monday-Friday), dinner (reservations recommended).
