A NOTE TO OUR READERS:
"Our Favorite Regional Restaurants" is from the Favorites 2005 issue of Southern Living.
ARKADELPHIA
Honeycomb Restaurant & Bakery (Traditional Southern): 706 Main Street; (870) 245-2333. Good food accompanies good works at this spot off I-30, midway between Little Rock and Texarkana.
Operated by a nonprofit organization, it primarily employs people with developmental disabilities. Breakfast prices are low (one egg with bacon or sausage). The lunch special can be anything
from chicken and dressing to beef brisket, with choice of vegetables such as speckled butter beans, sweet potatoes, or fried okra. Breakfast, lunch (closed Saturday-Sunday).
BISCOE
Riverfront Fish Market (Catfish): Off I-40 between Forrest City and Little Rock; (870) 998-7041. It's a dive, located out in the middle of nowhere, but worth the drive. The fried
catfish is moist on the inside, crispy out. If you think it can't get any better, bite into one of the fried pies. Try the raisin or coconut. Lunch, dinner (closed Sunday-Wednesday).
HOT SPRINGS
McClard's Bar-B-Q (Barbecue): 505 Albert Pike Road; (501) 623-9665 or www.mcclards.com. This local landmark is always crowded. Order the pork plate or sandwich, served with a sauce that
has just enough sweet and spice to not overpower the meat. Try the hot tamale spread, made from a family recipe. Lunch, dinner (closed Sunday-Monday).
LEWISVILLE
Burge's Hickory Smoked Turkeys & Hams (Traditional Southern): 526 Spruce Street (State 29 North); (870) 921-4292, 1-800-921-4292, or www.smokedturkeys.com. The menu lists everything
from barbecue to burgers, but go for the smoked meat sandwiches. The Smoked Turkey PoBoy on toasted New Orleans French bread will make your day. Lunch, dinner.
LITTLE ROCK
Sims Bar-B-Que (Barbecue): 716 West 33rd Street; (501) 372-6868 or www.simsbarbque.com. One of four area locations, this place hits the spot with tender pork ribs drenched in tangy dark
brown sauce. Save room for a slice of sweet potato pie. Lunch, dinner (closed Sunday).
MAGNOLIA
Backyard Barbecue Company (Barbecue): 1407 East Main Street; (870) 234-7890. In a state filled with barbecue joints, this ranks among our top choices. It offers both pork and beef.
Lunch, dinner (closed Sunday-Monday).
MOUNTAIN HOME AREA
Couch's Bar-B-Que (Barbecue): 1508 U.S. 62 East; (870) 425-5525. Guaranteed to satisfy your craving for ribs. Order the plate, which comes with a side of beans, slaw, and choice of
potato. Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Gaston's Restaurant (Traditional Southern): 1777 River Road, Lakeview (approximately 15 miles west of Mountain Home, on the White River); (870) 431-5202 or www.gastons.com. The
restaurant is part of Gaston's White River Resort. The menu is varied, but go for the fresh rainbow trout. If you've come to fish, they'll even prepare your catch. Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Leatherwood Restaurant (Traditional Southern): 901 State 56 East, Calico Rock (25 miles southeast of Mountain Home); (870) 297-4343. Here you'll find home-style cooking, with meat loaf
like mama makes, real mashed potatoes, and tender rolls. Lunch, dinner.
SPRINGDALE
AQ Chicken House (Traditional Southern): 1207 North Thompson Street; (479) 751-4633 or www.aqchicken.com. This casual family restaurant turns the spotlight on chicken. It comes
barbecued, blackened, fire-roasted, grilled, and smothered, but our favorite is the pan-fried. Tender and moist, it tastes like Sunday dinner at grandmother's house. Lunch, dinner.
