Chillin' With the Children
Turn on the water and the fun for a cool pool party.
By Shirley Harrington

Grab your swimsuits, and come on over for an afternoon of splashing in the pool, chatting with friends, and munching on yummy snacks.

For no-mess enjoyment of Chicken-and-Bean Slaw Wraps, eat them like frozen push-pops. Hold on to the raffia-tied end, and push the sandwich up and out of the parchment paper wrapping.

Chillin' With the Children Menu:
1. Chicken-and-Bean Slaw Wraps
2. Lemonade Cupcakes
3. Emerald Sea Punch
4. Creamy Pineapple-and-Ham Rollups
5. Buried Treasure Snack Mix

At least once this summer, give in to everyone's desire to run through a sprinkler by setting up a mini water park in your yard. Invite your children's best pals and their parents, and whip up our super-easy menu of treats. Go ahead--take the plunge into a day of play.

Safe Fun in the Sun
Here are a few tips to help keep everyone safe.

  • No-trip trick: The hose leading from a faucet to a sprinkler can be a tripping hazard. Position your hose out of pathways, and drape bags of play sand across it to weigh it down.
  • Watering hole: The best beverage for keeping the kids hydrated is water. Serve punch, juice, or soft drinks only once (okay, maybe twice) during the party.
  • Sun block: Have extra tubes of lip and body sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher on hand, along with hats and baggy T-shirts.
  • Indoor breaks: Lay a pathway of inexpensive rubber-backed rugs from the door to the bathroom to catch drips and prevent slipping on uncarpeted floors.
