Invite Neighbors Over for a Quirky Little Party
Ice the drinks and fire up the grill--no kitchen required for "ears and beers."
By Shirley Harrington • Photography Beth Dreiling • Styling Cari South • Food Styling Alyssa Porubcan, James Schend

Before summer heats up, invite your neighbors over for a quirky little party called "Ears and Beers." This late-afternoon gathering gets people cooking and talking together as they shuck and grill fresh corn, and then meet up at a seasonings table to doctor their hot ears. You'll probably shake in your flip-flops, hoping this off-the-wall idea works. I know it does--I tried it. As neighbors arrive, toting their favorite beverages, the laughter starts and everything falls into place. Near the end, whip out a sweet treat of Toffee-Almond Blondies. I promise you'll hear, "Let's do this every summer."

  • Grilled Corn on the Cob
  • Roasted Garlic-Red Pepper Butter
  • Smoky Chipotle-Lime Butter
  • Spicy Wasabi Spread
  • Creamy Lemon-Dill Spread
  • Cheesy Onion Spread
  • Toffee-Almond Blondies
