Web Excerpts for March Books The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Raising Childr
by Jill Conner Browne (Simon & Schuster, $22.95)
"The author just hopes this book provides even the briefest respite for the weary soul of the parent. Being a female-type mother herownself, the author does more specifically address here the plight of female-type mothers because that's the only area in which she had any experience at all. She is not now, nor has she ever been, a male-type father, and thus she can only judge them from her own perspective, and, admittedly, she generally finds them wanting. It is not, therefore, her intent to ignore or denigrate the role of fathers--so much as it is to ridicule same for the amusement of the mothers.
Parenting is the most incredibly full-time volunteer job ever--literally in the history of mothers--human and other-wise. Granted, some dads, human and otherwise, do help out--some help out a whole lot--but for the most part, in all species, if not for mothers, the whole thing woulda fallen apart aeons ago. God is nothing if not foresighted.
So, if you're a new mom who hasn't even hatched her first one yet--bless your heart--or if you're a seasoned veteran mom--bless your heart, too. God bless the hearts of any and all of us who help in any way, shape, or form to nurture the spirit, mind, and bodies of the children in this world. There are, after all, legions of true-in-every-sense-of-the-word mothers in our lives who did not give birth to us or to anybody else--and yet, without them, life for all would be immeasurably diminished." --excerpted from the book
