Plant Details

Prickly-leafed and prickly-stemmed plants to 3 ft. tall, 112 ft. wide, with large, showy poppies that bloom mainly in summer. Easy to grow from seed sown in place or in pots (transplant gently). Will reseed and colonize. Provide good drainage. Seed specialists may offer additional species.

A. mexicana. MEXICAN POPPY. Annual. Native to West Indies and probably Central America and Florida. Yellow to orange, 112- to 2-in. flowers. 'Yellow Lustre' grows 1122 ft. tall, has lemony-orange blooms.

A. polyanthemos. Annual or biennial. Western native with white, 2- to 4-in. flowers.
