Plant Details

From the western Mediterranean. One of the hardiest palms; survives temperatures as low as 10F. Clumps slowly develop from offshoots, curving to height of 20 feet.; may also reach 20 feet wide. Growth is extremely slow in northern part of range. Green to bluish green, fan-shaped leaves on leafstalks set with very sharp spines. Use in containers, mass under trees, grow as impenetrable hedge. Tolerates poor soil, strong winds. Deer don't bother with it. 'Vulcano' is compact and shrubby, to about 6 feet tall and half as wide; its thick leaves are set on nearly spineless stalks. Chamaerops Humilis argentea ( Chamaerops Humilis cerifera) has silvery blue foliage.
