Probably from Asia. Fast-growing, twining vine to 10 feet Leaves are made up of three broad, oval leaflets to 36 inches long. Fragrant, sweet peashaped, purple or white flowers appear in late summer or autumn, borne in loose clusters on long stems that stand out from foliage. Blossoms are followed by velvety, beanlike pods to 2 inches long, in a stunning shade of bright magenta-purple. Grow like string beans for quick, dense screening. Provide trellis or other support. Needs good drainage.
