Mostly native to Mediterranean region. Mounding plants or shrublets that brighten spring borders and rock gardens with their cheerful bloom. They thrive in poor, rocky soil as long as it is well drained.
A. montanum. To 8 in. high, 1 ft. wide with leaves that are gray and dense; short clusters of fragrant yellow flowers. The compact and heavy-flowering 'Berggold' ('Mountain Gold') is the most commonly sold variety. 'Luna' blooms 2 weeks earlier.
A. saxatile. See Aurinia saxatilis
A. wulfenianum. Prostrate and trailing to about 1 ft. wide, with fleshy, silvery leaves and sheets of pale yellow flowers.
