Painting Teacups and Saucers

Drink in the beauty of painted teacups and saucers.

Looking for a way to spruce up your table this spring? The solution is clear--clear glass dishes, that is. Embellish plain tableware found at housewares or department stores with paint. Then surprise guests with a stellar table setting, or have a painting party and let guests create their own designs. Follow these simple steps.

Step 1: Prepare your glass pieces by washing them with soap and hot water, or use glass cleaner to remove any film or residue; dry thoroughly.

Step 2: Apply surface conditioner with a brush, and let dry according to manufacturer's instructions.

Step 3: Brush on whimsical floral designs using glass/ceramic paint. Begin painting designs on the cups' exteriors about an inch from rim. Outline flowers in vibrant colors, and allow paint to dry according to manufacturer's instructions. (Tip: You may want to experiment with your designs first using a grease pencil.)

Step 4: To create swirled saucers, thin the paint with a clear medium. Beginning in center of plate, use a brush to create a swirl pattern; let dry. (Note: Be sure to paint on the underside of the saucer.)

Step 5: Apply two coats of clear gloss glaze, let dry according to manufacturer's instructions. Rub gently with steel wool to smooth paint finish. We recommend washing your new dishes by hand. (Tip: Purchase an additional teacup and saucer for practice.)
