Master Suite Makeover

There’s no need for a headboard when the entire wall is beautifully upholstered. The circular window adds light and depth to the room. A sliding glass door gives access to the bath.

Waterfront property is so hard to come by on the Florida Panhandle that when Charles and Lisa Hudson found a renovated commercial building, they decided to take the plunge. The roomy structure, once a popular Mexican restaurant, possessed slate flooring and plenty of other assets. However, its most colorful architectural feature―a circular stained glass window―just wouldn’t work with the renovation that the new owners had in mind. With designer Brad Speight of nearby Seaside, they revamped the large window and created a soothing master retreat in the surrounding space.

Brad used the round form of the window frame as the foundation for a contemporary Asian look that reflects simplicity and a muted palette. He replaced the colorful window insert with panes of frosted glass; then he padded the surrounding wall and covered it in straw-colored fabric. Simple wooden cabinets feature metal closures that echo the shape of the window, and crystal lamps sparkle at bedside. Because there are so few decorative elements in the room, Brad chose luxurious textiles to clothe the bed. He made the bedspread of Italian suiting and covered the pillows in burnt orange and embroidered cream silks.
