moreTell us about yourself.
After a 25-year career in accounting management, I now work part-time in agent services for Keller Williams Realty. My husband,
Michael, works in local government. We moved from Lenexa, Kansas (Kansas City suburb) to Bradenton, Florida, in 2000.
When were you diagnosed?
My doctor called me the day after a mammogram to notify me that the results were highly suspicious and most likely cancer.
The date was September 11, 2001. I had spent the morning watching the news coverage of the attack on America and found out
about my medical crisis the same day. A biopsy confirmed the diagnosis; and I had surgery, five months of chemo, and six
weeks of radiation.
How has cancer changed your outlook on life?
I used to be a classic Type A - intense, competitive and driven in my career, stressed out all the time. After my cancer
experience, I am much calmer and more easygoing. My faith in God became much more important to me. I quit smoking and started
exercising and eating a healthy diet.
What words of encouragement would you share with others with cancer?
"Take advantage of the American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery program. You will be assigned a volunteer breast cancer
survivor who can answer your questions and provide emotional support during your treatment journey."
