VILONIA, AR—Lorenda Dunham had no training in disaster relief when she showed up at the fire station with her husband and asked the fire chief how she could help. He pointed to the senior center, the storm relief HQ, and said, “Take care of that.” Lorenda stepped up as the de facto leader of hundreds of volunteers, working from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. for two weeks straight.
“It hasn’t been the disaster that’s overwhelmed me. It’s been the compassion. This is going to have a lifelong effect on some of these kids, like my nephew. He now knows that there’s a world outside of himself. He’s always got something he can give and a way to help.”
