One of the beauties of berries in the South is that you can pick them fresh almost everywhere.
One of my aunts picked wild raspberries in Alabama well into her nineties and savored the flavor of every ripe one. Southern berries are sensational: from the sweetness of strawberries to the rich flavor and color of blueberries, and from the sweet-and-slightly-tart raspberries to the boldness of blackberries, these fruit are simply some of our favorites. They can be served fresh, baked, turned into jams, or made into any number of other wonderful creations.
Strawberries find their way into ice creams, pies, cakes, and frostings; they become the basis for incredible glazes, and vinaigrettes; and they are literally beauty in each bite. Blueberries are beloved for their big flavor, baked into muffins and scones, packed into pies, and frozen into any number of cold dessert wonders. Whether the berries are handpicked, or simply picked up at the farmers' market, every variety of these great fruits makes meals from breakfast to bedtime simply delicious.
