Making Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is fast becoming a popular ingredient in the Southern Living Test Kitchen and our expert Marian Cairns is showing you how to make this easy recipe.

Hi. I'm Marion with the Southern Living test kitchen. Greek yogurt is fast becoming a popular ingredient in the test kitchen. It's denser and creamier than traditional style yogurt and you can find it at most grocery stores. The only problem is, it can be a little pricey. But don't worry, it's a cinch to make. Just start with traditional american style yogurt. Place a large strainer over a bowl, and line it with a coffee filter. But don't worry. If you don't have a coffee filter, you can use a paper towel. That'll work too. Spoon the yogurt into the coffee filter. You can go ahead and fill it all the way up. I'm going to cover this with plastic wrap and refrigerate it for about 8-24 hours. The longer it refrigerates, the thicker and denser it will become. This is refrigerated for about 24 hours. I'm going to peel back the coffee filter. You can see a lot of this liquid has drained out of the yogurt. This you can just discard. Wow, you can see how much thicker and denser this has become. You can use this in recipes that call for sour cream or mayonnaise. It gives your recipe a nice tangy flavor and it's a lot healthier for you too. I enjoy it with granola and a little bit of honey. And you can also use this in your favorite recipes for dips and sauces.
