Learn how to light a chimney starter with this tip from Test Kitchen Specialist Norman King.
Chimney starters are a favorite way to light up charcoal. They get your coals hot super fast, giving you a nice, even burn. To build your fire, turn the chimney upside down and fill with newspaper or a brown paper bag. Turn it right side up and fill with charcoal. Next, light the newspaper or brown paper bag in several locations around the bottom. Let stand 10 to 15 minutes until all the coals are glowing and you see a light gray ash form on top. Simply dump over unlit charcoal in your grill, and cover with the lid until the proper temperature that you want is reached.
