If you've got a power drill, a (clean) coat hanger, and a watermelon laying around, you're well on your way to making a refreshing summer beverage. Learn how to make a watermelon smoothie for your next outdoor gathering using these two surprising tools with tips from Test Kitchen Director Robby Melvin.
<p>We saw this really crazy video on how to make a water melon smoothie using a coat hanger and a power drill. [SOUND] So we're gonna give it a shot and see if it really works. The first step is to cut a hole in the side of the water melon. Hole should be small but the size of a silver dollar, cuz this is where we will be blending from. You don't want bits of water melon flying everywhere. Next we're gonna make a whisk out of a coat hanger. We need to unwind it from the hook. And once you've unwound it, you'll need to trim it, using pliers or wire cutters. It may not cut like butter. So you may need to saw back and forth to weaken it. And then snap it with your fingers. Finally, bend your trimmed coat hanger in half. And form it as straight as you can with your hands until you end up with a kind of whisk that looks like this. Your new whisk goes into the power drill. And you simply secure it the same way you would a drill bit. Now you've got your blender. And here we go. [MUSIC] As you're blending your watermelon, kind of keep moving side to side, really scraping the edges of the inner rind to really remove all that watermelon Watermelon and get it nice [UNKNOWN] up. Wow, this actually works. In the original video, they recommend you buzz it for about 30 seconds. I would recommend doing it a little longer, really moving it around the edges so you get all the watermelon nice and mixed up in there. Once you've blended your watermelon, you'll need to create a spout Cut a small plastic cup in half. And then cut the bottom off the half. And then place that in the hole of the watermelon. Finally, cut the bottom of the watermelon so you've got a flat surface that won't roll off the table. All right, then you want to pour yourself up a smoothie. And, hold on. Well, it turns out the spout didn't really work so well, so I'm gonna try something a little different. I'm gonna put the rim side of the cup in the watermelon, and see if that works any better for us. And there you go, amazing! We really recommend that you would use a seedless watermelon, unless you wanna deal with straining the seeds out. But all in all, this is a great way to do a smoothie. You could make it an adult beverage, spike a little vodka in there. Or just keep it the way it is for the kids and everyone else. [BLANK_AUDIO] You know, I prefer the traditional way to make a smoothie, by using a blender. But if you're having a backyard picnic, a barbecue. This is a great way to entertain kids and impress your party guests. It actually works. For more test kitchen wisdom, check out SouthernLiving.com. Refreshing. Tastes like Summer.
