Lucy Buffett's Love Of Southern Food
This Alabama native and cookbook author has turned her beloved hobby of cooking into a successful business. She began her journey of cooking with a Mobile, AL Junior League cookbook, in addition to picking up tricks of the trade from her grandmothers' kitchens. Lucy Buffett is not only Southern, as she expresses, but "coastal Southern. The South has a vibrant food culture, but the coastal South has so much seafood." She explained that, on the coast, folks love to spend their time outside. "We're recreating out on boats and we're catching shrimp or we're laying out on the pier." This coastal Southern lifestyle has been infused, thoroughly, into Lucy's Gulf Shore's restaurant, Lulu's. The concept was so popular in Alabama that Lucy now has branches of her relaxed – think Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville – seafood-focused joint in Destin and Myrtle Beach. Growing up, Lucy says, "we had to go to my grandparents on the Mississippi Gulf Coast once a month. Then it was always a big feast." This Southern businesswoman celebrates the community and gathering of this tradition in her new cookbook, Gumbo Love, which is her "Southern, coastal expression." In addition to some incredible recipes, Lucy considers this book to be her philosophy.
