Cinco de Taco: Minero's Chorizo Taco Will Blow Your Mind

Last year's taco list went LOCO (here's the link), so we're back on Cinco de Mayo 2016 with more favorite tacos to add to your Southern Bucket List.

My current top taco is... the Green Chorizo Taco at Minero.

Sean Brock's taco palace is equally good in Charleston (on East Bay St) or Atlanta (at the Ponce City Market) and worth getting in the car NOW to drive to the location nearest you. Note: both locations are 3 hours from me.

The crumbled Spanish sausage is topped with a parapet of potato and a single juicy grilled ring of onion. Every bite is savory but not salty, a feat I consider astounding with chorizo.

And before you cry taco sacrilege for not praising its tortilla, here you go: the tortillas at Minero are made from a blend of Southern corn so special I'm certain Anthony Bourdain has already taped a voice-over about it (flour is sourced from Masienda, Geechie Boy Mill and Anson Mills). They are soft and flavorful and fail to crack, leaking juice down your elbow. Order three of the Green Chorizo tacos at a time and count your palate properly blessed.

My friend and eating cohort Ann Bruccoliere is nudging me about other favorites we inhale at Minero. The Chips and Salsas are not to be missed (and yes they come in an oven mitt). The Fried Catfish taco with pickled green tomato can be categorically deemed addictive and the Bag of Churros with Mexican Chocolate Sauce are as good as the Chocolate con Churros I ate in Madrid.

Who else made my taco roundup?

Steph Burnette's Cinco de Taco (2016)

1-- Green Chorizo Taco at Minero, Charleston or Atlanta

Detailed above.

2-- Patagonia Steak Taco at Willy Taco, Spartanburg

This is a skirt steak taco marinated in Chimichurri and topped with charred tomatillo and frizzled onion (and it's as good as the Fried Avo Taco, my top taco last year).

3-- Fish Tacos with Kale Salad at Thoroughfare Food Truck, Greenville

I love this battered Mahi taco above all others because I think it's the only kale salad I actually really like (Neal and Jessica massage the fool out of it before dressing). Thoroughfare, in my opinion, is Greenville's Top Truck.

4-- Teriyaki Chicken Taco at Cantina 76, Columbia

Only a college town could birth a chicken taco with teriyaki and feta cheese this tasty. Don't judge until you've woofed down a basket of them.

5-- Bankok Shrimp Taco at White Duck Taco Shop, Asheville (NC), James Island (SC), Columbia (SC) & Johnson City (TN)

No one trumps this shrimp taco in my book, making it my only repeating wrap. The ever expanding taco concept of White Duck wins big with perfectly fried shrimp and quick curried pickles.
